After 23 there is only terra innumerata (or is is Web. 3.00?)

  • which thing/s you found most useful: The overall scheme was a very helpful "tour d'horizon" of what is out there, against which I could check what I had come across already and what was still unknown.
  • which thing/s you most enjoyed doing: Collecting wigits for i-Google and looking at Facebook with some real purpose in mind.
  • which thing/s you have persisted with: I now have managed to re-activate my Twitter account and Flickr and Slideshare are really useful additions to my armoury.
  • whether you think web 2.0 in general has a role in the future of libraries: Web.2.00 is already multifarious enough  to allow several different types of pathway, some more about style than substance. I think libraries should not feel sucked into any self-fulfilling scenario but try out what they think could be helpful to their evolving role and not hesitate to drop anything that isn't really productive. Libraries need to recall what their mission should be and reinvent accordingly but not simply to "be there"  for the sake of it, but to create their own distinctive pattern across a non-linear weave where they is no longer any single way of "staying ahead".

Slideshare Thing 22

I did look at this last week but forgot to blog it. I think this could be very useful for looking at other non- generic presentations in my areas or incorporating more generic adaptations into my own tutorials. So far, most of the animation seems to be lost once you have downloaded but it might not suit my own "animation style" ayway (if I can be thought to have one).

Thing 20 Thing 21

For me the purpose of these "Things" was to get some impression of what they might consist of, rather than immediate use-value. However, I was lucky in the Wikipedia article I selected as it had several mis-typings in it, so I was able to do some tidying up. Anything else I thought might just be tinkering or gilding the lily, so I didn't add the small amount of further information I had available.

Things 18-19

I was a bit surprised that any CC images found in Flickr can't be stored in one's own profile but can only be saved on one's own computer - though that might be helpful in other ways.

I found the instructions for YouTube a bit unclear at times but with a little help did manage to complete them - though I have yet to discover where the video has landed up!

In Memoriam - Günter Wand conducting Bruckner 9

I remember hearing this performance or a similar one shortly before Wand died.

Creating a Flickr Account

Flickr has been a name to me for a long time but without quite understanding where it might fit in. I am pleased to have an account and have joined the UoW23 Group and contributed one picture from the two I uploaded to my own Flickr account.

Diigo struggles

I finally managed to activate Diigo by having its own administrator do this from their end. I have added a number of bookmarks and set up the tool bar but not managed to get beyond the first window where you can click on "Highlight Section" - no further window appeared despite several attempts. Is some security device blocking it? So time to move on I think - I hope Deliicious survives!

Diigo and other diegos

Interested to know what Diigo might have been like but the activation e-mail though requested several times (and sent according to Diigo) has never arrived. You can't report a bug until you are activated! So another white hole or a new social space all sharing the abyss.

Reflections not all weak for Reflection Week

Q1:  Which thing have you found most useful so far?

A:  Learning how to go about setting up a blog, how it might be used, and also how to set up a Doodle poll which I'd only used passively up to now.

Q2:  Do you feel more confident online using social media sites?

A:  I had already been using Facebook but felt I was half blindfolded, whereas I feel it a bit easier to navigate now. I had never activated my Twitter account, so I will now see if anything interesting comes in that way.
Q3:  How can you apply what you've learned to your work?

A:   Practical insight into what students increasingly take for granted, but also more confidence to use Web 2.00 selectively, where it seems useful. I was struck by the finding that most Warwick researchers don't set much store by Web. 2.00 as a tool for them.

Q4:  Does this style of delivery suit your learning style?

A:  Yes indeed, as long as there is not too much going on at once. The step by step instructions remain as a permanent rescue line and I will need them for revision - I'm still not up to speed with RSS feeds.

Facebook Inessentials

I still don't find Facebook as smooth to navigate as it might be - sometimes pages move easily back and forth, at other times one has to keep returning to profile. Following Emma's advice I have reset my privacy settings.
I found looking at the British Library interesting as there was information and comments on the Ancient Mariner exhibition. The Library of Birmingham video was both glossy and ghoulish. Facebook could make nothing of "Warwick Option" but found our Library as its first hit.

Retweetiania

I have changed to the new Twitter which might not be quite the same as in the Step by Steps but I seem to be making out even though I retweeted a message but have no idea where it went. I have learnt you can only activate something you are following from certain screens and not from others.

Returning to Twitter

I set up a Twitter account a year or two ago but it refused to know me, so pleased to have renewed it again thanks to Emma's help

Things 7-8

Just finished things 7-8 and found it interesting to learn how to set up a Doodle scheduled event (I had used Doodle passively before but never started my own event on it).
The wigit connect back to iGoogle was very straight-forward - and at last I see the value of having a Facebook login.

Catching up with week 2

Nice to discover how much of this I already knew and how much not - more not than bells ringing as it turned out, so very useful to follow a step by step approach

Beginning "23 Things"

I am beginning the "23 Things" programme today and am hoping to see Web 2.0 as a whole (if it has a whole) rather than just using bits of it - though there is no reason why every segment should be equally useful.
